Hiring managers treat relocation as a line item and a start date. The people actually moving treat it as the most disruptive six weeks of their year. When an employee relocation to Kansas City goes badly, it rarely shows up as an HR complaint. What they miss is that Kansas City, Missouri levies a 1% earnings tax on work performed inside its city limits, regardless of which state the employee lives in. Someone who buys in Leawood and reports to a downtown office still owes it. Someone who buys in Leawood and works at an office in Johnson County does not.<\/span><\/p>\n

That single percentage point can outweigh the housing difference between two suburbs your new hire is agonizing over. Say it out loud during the offer conversation rather than letting them discover it in April. Kansas and Missouri also handle income tax differently enough that a dual-state household should talk to an accountant before signing anything, and HR looks better for raising it early.<\/span><\/p>\n

Commute patterns deserve the same honesty. I-435 and US-69 carry most of the Johnson County traffic, and a nine-mile difference between Olathe and Overland Park can mean twenty minutes each way at 7:45 in the morning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Build the timeline backward from the start date, not forward from the offer<\/span><\/h2>\n

The most common relocation failure is a hire who accepts on the first of the month and starts on the twentieth. That compresses house hunting, lease breaking, packing, and school enrollment into three weeks, and the employee spends their first month exhausted.<\/span><\/p>\n

A workable pattern is four to six weeks between signed offer and first day for a local or regional move, and six to eight for anything crossing multiple states.
